Adaptive Learning Storyline Development
This eLearning project, titled ESI - Emergency Service Index, was created for a major hospital network in the Mid-Atlantic region, specifically targeting their Emergency Nurse department. The project had dual objectives: firstly, to enable seasoned nurses to demonstrate their readiness for floor duties by successfully completing an aptitude test; secondly, to identify their areas for improvement through the eLearning module, which also recommended essential sections to be completed for progression.
Audience: Emergency Department Nurses
Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning development, visual design, sound design
Tools Used: Storyline 360, Rise, Canva, Illustrator, Audacity, Camtasia
I. Uncovering Challenges: Identifying Pain Points
In the initial phase of the ESI eLearning project, the focus was on understanding the specific challenges and needs. This involved identifying the pain points within the Emergency Nurse department of a large hospital network.
II. Laying the Foundation: Gathering eLearning Assets
The next step entailed assembling essential eLearning assets. This process included collecting backgrounds, AI voices, scripts, and conducting thorough research based on the ESI handbook to ensure the training was comprehensive and accurate.
III. Pathway Design: Creating Tailored Learning Experiences
The eLearning was designed with two distinct pathways. For New to Practice RNs or those new to the Emergency Department, a mandatory path was set. Conversely, experienced ED RNs were directed to a semi-optional path that activated adaptive learning.
IV. Adaptive Learning: Focusing on Efficiency and Practicality
The adaptive learning component was aimed at minimizing computer time and maximizing patient interaction for RNs. This involved a challenging pre-test requiring a 100% score for immediate course completion. RNs scoring below 100% received a personalized course tailored to their test responses, followed by a custom post-test.
V. Collaborative Course Design: Working with Subject Matter Experts
The final course design stage required extensive communication and collaboration with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). This partnership was crucial in ensuring the training was both accurate and effective.
VI. Reflecting on Possibilities: Enhancements for Future Projects
In reflecting on the project, while the outcome was successful, the availability of advanced tools and deeper insights opens up avenues for potential enhancements in future designs. The educational media could be transformed with access to more sophisticated AI technology, a stronger grasp of storyline development, and the application of gamification techniques. This might include creating more interactive and engaging learning experiences, personalized learning journeys that adapt in real-time to each learner's needs, and employing game-based elements to enhance motivation and retention. Such advancements could lead to even more effective and immersive training programs, making learning not just educational but also an enjoyable and memorable experience.
